THE MIRROR BY JULIANA NWAZODONI

My friend at the other end looks so much like me.

I used to say to her

all the things I would want her to be.

But when I leave her face,

I forget her image,

And wear the masks of every other person I see.

But I’ve had enough

Running around these circles.

I arranged another meeting.

Not the last,

But the prerequisite for the desired change-

The way out of these entanglements.

I kept to time this time.

I spoke to the girl in the mirror :

“There is something unique about you.

I haven’t seen you anywhere else.

I have been corrupting your image by wearing masks.

Every time I did that and found myself in a battle,

I was knocked down, beaten

And now I’m bleeding.

Today, I choose to let you live as you.

You’re perfect, the Master Artist made you.

I set you free girl – to be the conqueror that you are.

Go.

The outsiders can’t wait to see you shine”.
